Deep thoughts from Sockie the Sock Puppet

Saints & Poets to hold “Gorey Stories” Auditions

The Saints and Poets Production Company is pleased to announce auditions for their fall production of Gorey Stories, a musical entertainment based upon the works of Edward Gorey. Adapted by Stephen Currens and with music by David Aldrich, Gorey Stories features an assortment of weird characters and humorous, horrid happenings drawn from the best of the famed author and illustrator’s works. The New York Post calls it “a unique, odd, perverse and engaging entertainment. It is not an evening you are going to easily forget.”

Saints and Poets is looking for an ensemble of 6-7 actor/singers who are open to learning puppetry skills, able to create a variety of unique characters, and have an appreciation for the comically macabre. Ages 16+, no gender restrictions. Auditions will consist of solo and group readings and solo singing. Please come prepared with a short selection (around 32 measures) of a song from an appropriate genre. Accompaniment will be provided. Audition scenes and forms are available below and hard copies will be provided at auditions.

Auditions will be Monday, August 14, and Wednesday, August 16, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm both nights. Those auditioning need only attend one evening but please check in as close to 6:30 as possible. The audition location is the Off Center for the Dramatic Arts at 294 North Winooski Avenue in Burlington. Rehearsals will begin in early-September, 3-4 times per week in the south end of Burlington and occasionally in Colchester. Performances are October 19-28 at the Off Center.

Sockie says “Welcome”

Whew…the big day is finally here! We have launched our latest production and it’s not a play or a film…it’s a new website and logo!

The new site features production notes and photos from all our shows, posters and a film archive. But first things first…meet Sockie the Sock Puppet, the new Saints and Poets “Spokespuppet”:

Sockie was created by frequent S & P collaborator and Burlington designer Alec Julien and replaces our previous (kinda lame) clipart marionette logo. Nothing against marionettes, but a marionette has yet to appear in one of our productions. And our performers have frequently worn socks on stage. Anyway, we tasked Alec with making a logo that incorporated a puppet. He took that minimal direction and did a fantastic job creating a logo we think represents some of the playfulness that we try to incorporate in all our work. Thank you, Alec!

And a huge shout out to Lori Roberts and her team at Perfect Circle Communications and Design for their terrific work on the website. We threw a lot of content at them (eleven productions worth) and they helped us put our best foot forward with patience, thoughtful guidance and top notch design advice – take a peek around and we’re sure you’ll agree!

We hope you enjoy the new site and thanks for visiting Sockie’s Corner, the new Saints and Poets Production Company blog! Be sure to check the blog for show updates, behind-the-scenes content from our current productions and, of course, deep thoughts from Sockie the Sock Puppet.
